So I’ve been working as a Cloud Systems Developer for a consulting company for the last year and a half. It’s been an interesting journey from my previous work as an application programmer. I’m going to share some of the lessons learned, comparing the role of corporate developer to consultant.

Dropbox Moves Away From AWS
In an article from Geekwire, Dropbox announces cost savings by moving away from AWS and towards an in-house solution.
Dropbox was an early adopter of a cloud solution for a revolutionary product. In essence, they took Amazon’s AWS S3 service, which is used to store flat files, and built a product that was easy to use. I’ve been a user and fan of Dropbox for years, and it is still my primary platform for sharing files among all my devices.
AWS Certified Zombie
Hello zombies!
After spending three months studying, I managed to earn my first AWS certification – the AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate).
I want to spend a bit of time talking about the AWS certification process, certifications in general, and what a certification actually means.
AWS – A Concern for Amazon Competitors?
I came across an interesting article on Geekwire today. In it, Kroger expresses that it is moving away from the AWS platform because of competitive concerns.
Kroger is a huge grocery store chain found in 34 of the 50 states in the US. I lived in Florida for the first 22 years of my life, which meant that “going to the grocery store” meant going to Publix. Books have been written about their unique philosophy towards doing business. I had no idea what Kroger was until I moved to Atlanta, nor how big they were as a company.
With Amazon recently purchasing Whole Foods, they are busy transforming the high end, fancy grocery store sometimes referred to as “Whole Paycheck” into a competitive cheaper grocery store. And also likely a different shopping experience (for a humorous read, check out “Surviving Whole Foods“) This means that Amazon is now competing in Kroger’s main business space, their “bread and butter”, if you’ll forgive the pun.
Zombie Got A Blog?
So one of my programming friends today noticed I mentioned something about my blog, and I got the question: “Zombie, you got a blog? What’s it about?”
The truth is, I’ve tried to start blogs in the past. And they went nowhere. I started a blog based on a modern fantasy setting based on Urban Arcana Campaign Setting (d20 Modern) in the past. I’ve started a blog about writing. I’ve even started programming blogs. They went nowhere though.
You see, I made mistakes in my approach to the blog. I didn’t really have a theme, and it wasn’t focused enough. It also wasn’t a classroom, it was a gallery.
ZOMG! There are Zombie Programmers?
Yes, there are indeed zombie programmers. Perhaps you have missed the latest newsletter on the zombie apocalypse. If so, let me bring you up to speed.
Zombie Programmers have existed for a long time. Some go to school. Some work in cubicles. And some are freelance zombie programmers!
That’s me. I’m Zombie Tim.
